Stephen Holloway - Bass-Baritone

Stephen's voice is a basso cantante, dark in colour and bright in timbre. He made his professional debut in 1992, since when he has built up an enviable reputation in opera, concert and recital work.

Stephen graduated in economics from Christ's College, Cambridge, and began his singing studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Ellis Keeler, where he was a student on the Post-Diploma Vocal Training course. While at the Guildhall he sang the role of Bartolo in the college production of The Marriage of Figaro.

After graduating from the Guildhall he subsequently studied with Vera Rosza, Madge Stephens, Dennis Wickes, Angela Hickey and, currently, Neil Howlett.

Stephen has also participated in Masterclasses at the Britten-Pears School with John Carol Case, Sir Peter Pears, Paul Esswood, Galina Vishnevskaya, Steuart Bedford, Colin Graham and Nancy Evans, and at Brereton was a student of Horst Gunter.

Stephen has performed roles with many leading opera companies.  Roles include: Colline (La Boheme) with I Maestri; Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Ramphis (Aida) with Midsummer Opera; Bartolo (Marriage of Figaro) and Basilio (Barber of Seville) with Oyster Opera; Commendatore (Don Giovanni) with First Act Opera; Cadmus/Somnus (Semele) with Parnassus; Basilio (Barber of Seville) and Sarastro (The Magic Flute) with Opera Interludes; Fafner (Das Rheingold) with Mastersingers; Doctor Grenvil (La Traviata), Old Hebrew (Samson & Delila), Harapha (Samson) and Thantatos/The Oracle (Alceste) with Scottish Opera; Dead Master (Pfitzner) with the Royal Opera which he performed at The Royal Opera House, London, and The Metropolitan Opera House, New York.

Stephen Holloway’s concert engagements have included Christus in Bach's St John Passion at the Royal Festival Hall, The Creation in Lincoln Cathedral, the Haydn Nelson Mass for Collegium Musicum, Bergen, and Verdi Requiem in Westminster Abbey, the Barbican Hall and Lichfield Cathedral, St John Passion and St Matthew Passion for Bath Bach Choir, Dvorak Requiem for Birmingham Festival Choral Society, and the Verdi Requiem for Concerts from Scratch at the Royal Albert Hall conducted by Sir David Willcocks.  His recordings include The Unknown Elgar for Pearl and numerous works for Midsummer Opera.

Stephen now combines his performing career with a thriving teaching practice from his studio in the centre of Lincoln.
